‘Being Church means being God’s people, in accordance with the great plan of his fatherly love. This means that we are to be God’s leaven in the midst of humanity. It means proclaiming and bringing God’s salvation into our world, which often goes astray and needs to be encouraged, given hope, and strengthened on the way. The Church must be a place of mercy freely given, where everyone can feel welcomed, loved, forgiven, and encouraged to live the good life of the Gospel.’
(Pope Francis, Evangelium Gaudium)
The Holy Father, Pope Francis’, description and vision for the Church applies very much to our parish here on the Northern Beaches of Cairns, and particularly to our parish school, Holy Cross School. Our School must be Christ centred, and as such a place of mercy, welcome, love, and reconciliation as proclaimed by Jesus Christ and the living out of his Gospel.
Such notions are not far distant and removed from present reality, but must be grounded in the everyday experiences of life within the school day. In that sense what happens in the school yard and classroom at Holy Cross School is very much that of a Christian community’s life.
I hope all members of our parish school will find within it a genuine place of Christian faith.
